This study investigates the relationship between innovation and competitive advantage in small and medium-sized enterprises (SMEs), employing a mixed-methods experimental design integrating survey-based quantitative analysis and qualitative interviews. A dataset of 362 SMEs across diverse sectors was analyzed using structural equation modeling, principal component analysis, and thematic coding. The results show that innovation positively influences profitability, market share, export performance, and customer retention, confirming its central role in building competitive advantage. Incremental innovation enhanced operational stability, while radical innovation yielded breakthrough competitiveness despite higher volatility. Digital adoption, including cloud technologies and e-commerce platforms, significantly improved efficiency and international competitiveness, whereas sustainability-oriented innovation enhanced customer loyalty and reputational capital. Regional and firm-level factors, such as age and resource availability, moderated innovation outcomes, suggesting that contextual elements shape competitiveness. The integration of quantitative and qualitative findings underscores the multidimensional role of innovation as a driver of resilience and growth. The study contributes to the literature by empirically validating the multifaceted link between innovation and competitive advantage in SMEs and offers practical implications for managers and policymakers in fostering innovation ecosystems.
